Data Engineer III
Job Description
The Data Engineer III will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining scalable, highly available, and reliable enterprise database platforms supporting critical business applications at American Express. This role will focus on relational and NoSQL database technologies, including Couchbase, Cassandra, MongoDB, and PostgreSQL, with key responsibilities spanning database lifecycle management, performance optimization, capacity planning, backup and recovery, and infrastructure automation. The position will drive operational efficiency through automation, enhance database platform stability and scalability, and collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to deliver secure, resilient, and high-performing database solutions aligned with enterprise technology standards and business objectives.
- Design, develop, implement, and support enterprise-scale relational and NoSQL database platforms, ensuring high availability, scalability, performance, and reliability.
- Manage end-to-end database lifecycle activities, including installation, configuration, upgrades, patching, capacity expansion, backup, recovery, and performance optimization.
- Engineer and maintain distributed database clusters supporting mission-critical applications and high-volume transactional workloads.
- Develop and implement infrastructure and database automation solutions using Ansible, Python, Shell scripting, and other automation frameworks to improve operational efficiency.
- Collaborate with application development and architecture teams to design efficient data models, optimize database access patterns, and address complex performance challenges.
- Drive proactive database monitoring, troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement of database platform stability.
- Support database infrastructure modernization initiatives, including cloud adoption, automation, and platform standardization.
- Integrate database engineering and operational processes with Agile and CI/CD practices to enable efficient and reliable deployments.
- Partner with cross-functional engineering, infrastructure, and production support teams to resolve technical challenges and deliver scalable database solutions.
- Contribute to database engineering standards, technical documentation, operational procedures, and best practices for enterprise database environments.
